Who needs one:

- Nonresident aliens who owe U.S. tax obligations.
- Dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens or legal residents who cannot obtain an SSN.
Important:
- The ITIN does not authorize work in the U.S.
- It does not provide access to Social Security benefits.
- It does not change a person’s immigration status.
