An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax identification number issued by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Who needs one:

  • Foreigners residing in the U.S. who do not qualify for an SSN.
  • Nonresident aliens who owe U.S. tax obligations.
  • Dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens or legal residents who cannot obtain an SSN.

Important:

  • The ITIN does not authorize work in the U.S.
  • It does not provide access to Social Security benefits.
  • It does not change a person’s immigration status.
